The Metolius has been great. In the springtime, the diversity of hatches will make your head spin. Green drakes out and about on most days. Caddis are coming off at various times throughout the day, most are size 14 -18. There may even be some bigger size 10 -12 october caddis that come off during this cool weather. Blue winged olives will likely have fairly large hatches this week and pale morning duns will be out also. For subsurface flies, focusing on mayfly imitations is a good way to go. Green drake nymphs, PMD and BWO nymphs are good choices, as are general mayfly patterns. Pupa patterns can be really productive, near the bottom or the surface. Golden stones are almost always a good nymph to have on. Fishing for bull trout has been fair, nymphs and streamers are good bets. Fish love eating dry flies in cloudy weather. Rain and cool weather will help reduce the likelihood of fires, so embrace it while it’s here.
