Oh boy has it been a great time to be a whale! The sunny weather has given the kelp forests a boost which means the amphipods and mysid shrimp (main baleen whale diet) are thriving! With plentiful food comes hearty sightings of whales to go along with it. For the past three and a half months the sightings have been 100% regardless of the time of day. Depoe Bay is home to a species called Gray Whales (Eschrichtitus robustus). They are a baleen whale which means instead of cone shaped teeth that other toothed whales have, this group instead has thick, fibrous material in their place.
